I know over the years yoga became the trendy thing to do and maybe even the cool, new buzzword. As a dedicated yogi, I’m here to assure you that the benefits of yoga are real and, if done regularly, something your body and even your mind will begin to crave. I have to warn you though; the side effects from a yoga high are very real.

Side effects may include:

  • An after-class glow
  • Boost in self-esteem
  • Feeling accomplished
  • Possible increase of strength and flexibility
  • Learning a new asana (posture)
  • Finding stillness
  • Actually enjoying class
  • Zen state of mind

So if the side effects aren’t enough for you to get started, here are five reasons why you should start a yoga practice:

  1. Yoga is for everyone

I can’t stress this enough. Yoga is one-size fits all, meaning it’s for everyone. Literally, I mean anyone can do it, young or old, short or tall, and big or small. There are no prerequisites to get started, you don’t have to be a certain gender, or race. Most importantly, yoga is not a religion; so no matter whom you worship, you can still be a yogi.

We live in the digital age, so there are no shortages of resources available. I took my first class in college, then started practicing at home with a Reebok DVD set that I still own today. YouTube is a wonderful way to study under different teachers for free or a low cost. There are countless videos for beginners that are perfect to help you get started.

Of course there are also live classes and workshops at studios and gyms. I highly suggest taking one; it’s always great to get professional feedback on how you’re doing and to make sure you’re doing the poses correctly. If the prices are too steep for you, search for community or donation classes or opt for taking one at your local community center.

  1. Yoga is fun

Yes, I said yoga is fun. I know some of you might be thinking “how can working out be fun?” Well, it’s a different experience that can’t really be explained unless you try it for yourself. There’s something magical about trying something new and learning to do something that you didn’t think you were capable of.

  1. Yoga is not a one-time thing

Like many things in life, yoga requires practice. If there is an asana you want to conquer, or stress you want to defeat, you have to keep returning to your mat. It’s important to maintain a consistent practice so that you can continue to grow and experience new benefits. It’s like a game, each level that you beat you unlock new treasures and rewards. Yoga is the same way, the more you practice, the more you will learn about yourself and your body.

  1. Yoga is much deeper than asanas

Once you commit yourself to your practice, you will begin to transform. Some people might think that yoga is all about being able to do a handstand or being able to put your leg behind your head. Although those asanas can be fun to practice, according to science, some of us might never be able to do certain asanas no matter how we practice simply because everyone’s body is created differently.

If you fully immerse yourself in a committed practice, you too will realize that there is more to yoga than asanas. I once heard that yoga is the journey through yourself to yourself.

I want to encourage you to start today and begin to explore how your body feels. Don’t be afraid of the unknown or get frustrated by what you “can’t” do today. If you don’t put limits on yourself, you will begin to blossom and experience all of the sweet goodness that yoga has in store for you.
