Congratulations are in order for a couple of our favorite activists who have been effective at bringing some of the most ignored issues to the forefront of social justice through their respective work. Laverne Cox and DeRay Mckesson are being celebrated by The New School in this year’s commencement ceremony, as the two are being bestowed with honorary degrees for their contributions to their aligned social causes and paralleled interests with the graduating class.

The New School is considered a progressive university for its dynamic approach at solving the toughest issues facing society, and has churned out notable artists, activists, and designers since its beginnings in 1919.  Other honorees that are being awarded this year include forensic anthropologist, Mercedes Doretti, fashion designer, Diane von Furstenburg, President and CEO of the International Rescue Committee, David Miliband, and media critic and creator of Feminist Frequency, Anita Sarkessian.

Let’s hope that the commencement is live-streamed so we can all watch, share, and celebrate this moment with Cox, McKesson, and the rest of the amazing honorees.
